Day 2: Dole Pineapple Plantation, Northshore, and Giovanni's Shrimp Truck

The agenda for today was:

1) Dole Pineapple Plantation http://www.dole-plantation.com/
2) North shore
3) Giovanni's Shrimp Truck address: 83 Kamehameha Highway, Kahuku, HI 96731
4) Matsumoto Shave Ice http://www.matsumotoshaveice.com/

I chose to go to these places today because they are all located near each other. First the plantation. Then on your way to Giovanni's you will be going through North shore and on your way back to Waikiki you can hit up Matsumoto. We didn't plan on spending that much time over at North shore so we only went to this side of the island once.

Woke up Monday morning and Brandon went out and got us breakfast. If you plan on visiting Oahu you must try some Malasada from Leonard's Bakery http://www.leonardshawaii.com/

Crispy outside and chewy inside. Sugar or Cinnamon sugar. Really basic but really good.

What should you pair with Malasadas? Mimosas of course. Nothing like some Martini Rossi Asti mimosas to get your morning going.

So after we had our breakfast we headed out. Howie heard that the biggest Target in the United States is in Oahu. So we had to stop by and check it out.
Target
4380 Lawehana St
Honolulu, HI 96818

Yes, this Target sells spam musubi. If you don't know what that is. It is a slice of spam on a bed of sticky rice and wrapped in Nori (seaweed wrap for sushi)
The musubi pictured here has an egg in it too.

Found some shades while we were there too.

Arrived to the Dole plantation. We mainly went there for two reasons. One it was John's and Peter's first time to Hawaii so we did the most touristy thing possible. Two we had to have pineapple soft serve ice cream. If you have ever been to Disneyland and had the pineapple ice cream. You know what I mean.
Peter is having pineapple ice cream with fresh pineapple.
John is having a pineapple float. Pineapple juice and pineapple ice cream.
Peter is that part of your diet? John says yes!!

At the plantation there is a train ride, a giant maze and a garden.
We did the maze and garden combo. It was like $10 bucks.
The Maze: when you go through the maze they give you a little score card like thing. There are blank boxes on it. You run around looking for these metal boxes inside the maze. These boxes have a cut out of a picture. You stick your card under the cut out and trace the picture onto your card. I think there are 9 in total. It was not an easy task. In like 40min I was only able to find 3 before I gave up.
The garden: pretty much what it sounds like. A garden with all kinds of plants: Bananas, papaya, coffee, coconut and others.
The maze and garden are not really necessary to go through. We were there for the ice cream and to burn some time we decided to go through the two attractions. If you don't have time to waste the Dole Pineapple Plantation is not on the top of my list of things to do.

After the plantation we headed to Giovanni's. On the way there you will be going through North shore. We didn't really care to watch surfers but if you want to there are plenty of spots to pull over and watch. Sorry I don't have any pics of North shore.
On your was to Giovanni's you will see a lot of imitation shrimp trucks/shops. Don't be fooled. Giovanni's is the first and original shrimp truck. It's worth the drive so don't give in to those fakes.
It's so popular this this hen took her peeps there.

Brandon and his shrimp. You can get a half or full plate. Full plate is $13 comes with two scoops or rice and 12 shrimp cooked in a buttery garlic sauce. Half plate is half the shrimp and one scoop of rice.

Peter is all over this. Good bye diet. At least he's having a water.

John and Howie's arm gives it the seal of approval.

Donny gives his sexy approval.

For those who are extra hungry they sell hot dogs cooked in their garlic sauce.
I had the hot dog. It was alright but Howie loved it. I should have gone for another plate of shrimp.
Brandon really likes hot dogs.

Right after Giovanni's We headed out for some Shaved Ice at Matsumoto Grocery Store. There was a really long line. They are well organized there. So the line moves really fast.
The last time I was here the shaved ice was awesome. That was in 2007. After having it on May 2009 I was really disappointed. The shaved ice was not had smooth and soft as I remembered. It was kind of chunky.
Waiola Shave Ice is way better hands down more on that later.
Matsumoto is more of a tourist spot now. I would say you won't miss out on anything if you skip this and go straight to Waiola. Plus you won't have to go out of your way if your staying around the Waikiki area.
Peter is not happy waiting in line.

Peter's happy now. Can you guess who's from Hawaii in this pic?

The guy in the pink loves shaved ice!!!
