Hawaii Dec 2019 trip report day 4: Basalt, Island Vintage Shave Ice, Tonkatsu Tamafuji

We had some visitors on our balcony in the morning.

Phillip and Jensen went to get some groceries for lunch. So, Tammy, Viet and I headed out for breakfast at Basalt.

Guava mimosa.

Pork Belly Fried Rice: bacon fried rice, roasted pork belly, two fried eggs. I thought the food was okay. I was hoping for a thicker cut of pork belly.

Eggs Benedict: two poached eggs, whipped hollandaise, country-style potatoes, choice of maple honey ham, Portuguese sausage, or kale-tomato.

Loco Moco: wagyu beef patty, bacon fried rice, mushroom gravy, grilled onions, lava egg.

After breakfast, we headed out for shaved ice for dessert.

My usual go-to spot for shaved ice is Waiola, but since we didn't have the car we looked for something that we could walk to. Tammy suggested Island Vintage Shave Ice which she had on a recent trip.

(left) Pink Island: strawberry, lychee mint, soft ice cream, popping boba, mochi. (right) Coconut Island: coconut, mango, soft ice cream, popping boba, mochi. I was really impressed with how good the flavor was and how fine the shaved ice was. I would definitely go back.

We headed back to our rental to help my mom prep lunch for everyone. Phillip's friend Chris always takes care of us when we visit. So my mom wanted to treat him with some home-made Vietnamese Pork & Crab Noodle soup. My mom prepped most of the soup base at home, froze it and brought it over.

While we prep we drink!

Time for a taste test.

We had everyone meet at our building since we had a nice sized community pool area. The grills were coin-operated $2 for an hour, which was perfect to keep the soup hot.

We also made a bunch of spring rolls also.

After lunch, we headed back to your room to rest up. When it was time for dinner we headed out to Tonkatsu Tamafuji which was about a 15 min walk from our rental. My friend John and a few other people have been raving about this place, so we had to check it out.

You grind your own sesame seeds for your dipping sauce.

Tonkatsu with cheese. Omg, this is a super tender piece of pork cutlet. It's freaking delicious.

After dinner, we met up with the squad to head out for some drinks.

That ends day 4.
