Trip Report: Oahu day 5: Lanikai Beach, Kono's Kailua, Kaneko Hannosuke, Kokoro Cafe, Marukame Udon

This morning we headed over to the other side of the island to check out Lanikai Beach.

Stopped for some breakfast at Kono's Kailua. Parking was a bit difficult to find.

Sunrise smoothie: OJ, Strawberry, Banana

Biscuit Slider Trio: Kalua Pork, bacon, & Portuguese sausage

Chuns Breakfast Bomber fully loaded: Kalua pork, bacon, eggs, potatoes, cheese, avocado, sour cream, jalapeno.

Lanikai beach is a nice place to snorkel cause they have a reef area that's not too far from shore. We didn't have snorkel gear, but were still able to see some fish. Plus the wave break is a further out, so the water is pretty calm. Kind of reminded me of the Bahamas.

Saw a this Tempura spot Kaneko Hannosuke a few days ago and I really wanted to try it out.

Premium Tempura Set

Shrimp Tempura Set. Tempura soft boiled egg is what sold me on this place.

For dessert we went to Kokoro Cafe

Mochi Pop: mochi waffle with toppings.

Shaka-Boom: choose a filling, choose a soft serve, then your toppings.

Headed back to Rivals Sport Lounge to play some more games. It's Triva Tuesdays with prizes at night.

Went to Marukame Udon for dinner.

Called it a night and headed back to our hotel for the evening.
That's it for day 5. Tomorrow we head to the Zoo.

Trip Report: Oahu day 4: Koko Head Cafe, Honolulu Tavern, Rivals, Pineapple County, Kelly O'Neils's, Afternoon Tea (Halekulani), Sam's Kitchen

For breakfast this morning Tammy chose Koko Head Cafe. Chef Lee Anne Wong won Iron Chef America in 2011.

This meter takes credit card? but it looks so outdated.

Top of Mauna Kea: steamed milk, gold & dark rum, local honey-vanilla, Hawaiian sea salt.
Yes, it's as delicious as it sounds.

Eggs Haloa: poached eggs on poi biscuit, coconut luau, soul poi hollandaise, local greens

Don Buri Chen: miso smoked pork, five spice pork bell, french-style scambled eggs, house-made pickles, chicharron, sushi rice. This was really good. I'm not a fan of scrambled eggs, but these were done very well.

Made our way back to our hotel. Didn't really have much going on so early in the morning, so I decided I wanted to go dive bar hopping.

Our first stop was Honolulu Tavern. I guess the bartender was running late, but another worker made me a drink anyways. Under four dollars for well, but he comped my drink anyways. I told him we were dive bar hopping and he gave a bunch of places to visit that were within walking distance.

Next was Rivals, but they weren't opened yet. So headed off to our next stop.

We were headed to Moose McGillycuddy's, but just happened to come by Pineapple County so we popped in to look around.

We were walking to Moose but saw across the street was Kelly O'Neil's which was on the dive bar list and went their instead, since we already went to Moose yesterday.

I love these fortune machines and always buy a fortune when I see one.

My fortune. Every time I buy one they always seem to be spot on. I'm pretty sure it just correlation, but still. I hope this fortune is right and I own a beautiful home one day.

Tammy's fortune, even for her it was on point.

Not that many people drinking before noon, but we are!

Drinks here were about $7-8 bucks.

Around 1 pm we headed back to Rivals.

Happy Hour Mon-Fri  12p-7p $4 wells & $5 calls.
Asked our bartender Russ for a drink suggestion for Tammy since she's not an alcoholic like me. He made lava flow. Which was really good.

Poppers with spicy mayo.

They also have gaming tablets which were free to play.

We had afternoon tea reservations at 3 pm, so we headed back to change and walked over Halekulani

Found a new feature on my camera that isolates color. I really like this shot, but wished it had better focus. That's what I get for using a manual focus lens.

I called to make reservations for afternoon tea the day before so that we can get seating at Orchids for the view.

They have a box with all the tea samples they had for the day.

We opted for Champagne afternoon tea.
First you're served tea and freshly baked Currant Scones & poppy seed pastry bites, accompanied by Double Devonshire Cream, Lemon Curd, and Kula Strawberry Preserve.

Then Champagne with strawberries and cream.

Next was tea sandwiches:
Smoke Salmon with Lemon Cream on Rye Bread
Chicken Salad with Crumble (forgot what it was exactly)
Black Forest Ham and Watercress with Grain Mustard on Poppy Seed Bread
Cucumber with Cream Cheese and Chives on Caraway Seed Bread

Assortment of Pastries and Cake.

After tea we headed over to YSL to "browse" ended up with this.

Took a siesta then headed back out for dinner.

I really wanted some Garlic Shrimp, but wasn't planning to head to North Shore on this trip. So I looked online for a place with Garlic Shrimp and the reviews led me to Sam's Kitchen. Got our food to go and head to the beach to eat.

Saw Cuckoo Coconuts  on our way to the beach. They had a cover band and looked like a fun spot.

Found nice spot with a ledge next to the water to sit and eat.

I got Spicy Garlic Shrimp, which was okay. It doesn't compare to Giovanni's or the other shrimp trucks at North Shore. They did however have a pineapple tea that was pretty tasty and free if you use Yelp Check-in.

Had a great night eating on the beach and listening to music.

That ends day 4. Sadly only two nights left.
